Arizona athlete Cristian Roque succeeds in football, life with autism

To see his son win a talent show playing guitar and signing Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell,” to see him bowl a game of 299, to see him line up at nose guard on Friday nights, Juan Roque brims with pride.
“He’s my hero,” said Juan, a big fixture at 6-foot-7 on Arizona State’s offensive line on the 1996 football team that nearly won the national championship.
Cristian Roque, the El Mirage Dysart High School senior football player, has come a long way since Juan and his wife were asked to come to Cristian’s school when he was a first grader.

Man shoots self on South Dakota HS football field before game

Authorities say a Friday night police chase ended with a man shooting and injuring himself on the Chamberlain High School football practice field.
Chamberlain Police Chief Joe Hutmacher said authorities became aware of a 20-year-old man threatening suicide through a Facebook post at about 3:30 Friday afternoon.
An officer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs spotted the man in the Lower Brule area around 6:20 p.m. and attempted to make contact with him, Hutmacher said, leading to a pursuit that involved the BIA, Brule County Sheriff’s Office, Chamberlain Police Department and South Dakota Highway Patrol

Texas quarterback's insane night: 789 yards, 12 touchdowns

Peyton Bevel probably had an idea that he was having a good night. He had no clue that he had just written his name into the history books.
The Stamford senior threw for 789 yards and 12 TDs — both 11-man state records — to outgun De Leon 90-62 on Friday. Bevel spoiled a fine outing by Bearcats quarterback Kevin Yeager, who helped light up the Bill Anderson Stadium scoreboard with eight total scores himself.
The Bulldogs built a 28-0 lead before the second quarter, and De Leon (2-3) never got closer than 20 points

On Friday night, Pinnacle High quarterback Spencer Rattler broke the Arizona passing yards record of 10,489 in a 52-23 win over Sandra Day O’Connor.

This AZCentral story from August recounts the rise of the USA TODAY High School Sports’ Chosen 25 quarterback.

Spencer Rattler’s biggest equipment addition this high school football season has been a microphone taped to his midsection.
A five-man camera crew follows him — from his home to Phoenix Pinnacle High School, to the team-meeting rooms, to the practice fields, to the Friday night lights
